Amen brothers. It's sad b/c i found similar conversations all over the internet and no one is defending magic on any of them. I'm retired from Magic (although I still keep my decks. Just can't get rid of them.). I hate the sets, I hate the lack of strategy. I really hate how you go to a tournament and see the same 10 decks ruling the tournaments. All they do is copy other people's decks. GRRRRRR. Oh well i'm currently producing my own card game with a few friends of mine and we'll be looking for a publisher soon. We're focusing on strategy and balance.

That is my opinion too. I started to play Magic with Homelands, and so I´m also a kind of veteran of this card game. And sure, I also hate the new editions. Mirrodin was ugly, artefacts become common and the principle of the game was gone. At this time I realized that the game won´t be the same like it was in better times.
Although these things I kept on collecting Magic cards, because I like the Asian culture and history. In order to this I bought also the Kamigawa block and even some cards from Ravnica but, like I said, it wasn´t the same.
I remember my early times where I was happy to open a booster and found a 3/3 with trample for only (!) three colourless and two green manna. Today such a card sucks.
It´s a different time and the soul of Magic got lost. I´m still sad, because I loved this game for more than ten years and now the only thing that is left is the memento of a better time.

couldn't agree more mate piss it off, and thats not to mention the dangerous fatigue streeses it puts shift workers under, the extra pressure it puts parents under and it costs a lot more to run an airconditioner than a light globe

Wow this is my top complaint every time I go to a tournament. When someone playing magic for 2 months woops your ass just 'cause they have more disposable income its disgraceful for the game of magic (and my outdated deck apparently). If you don't have 4 Garruks ($25) and 4 Tarmogoyfs ($45) then you lose unless you yourself fork up more money for the cards to stop those cards. I haven't bagged on buying new cards, but put a stop to myself playing Type II, Type 1.5 is where you separate the newbies from the experienced. A lot of old combos can still hold there own, stasis/kismet, winter orb control, worldgorger/animate dead, they flush out faerie and merfolk decks quite quickly. New cards are too powerful indeed, why play a doppelganger when you have vesuvan shapeshifter it's obsolete and used to be my favorite card and favorite artwork which is the biggest and by far worst downfall of magic, CRAPPY artwork made on a computer, no appreciation.

I agree. I learned to play more then 10years ago with friends who let me borrow extra cards for the night to build a deck. Was a fun and great learning tool on how to build decks. When I finally moved got a good job and could afford to buy magic I decided to try online as that had just started. I misunderstood about redeeming cards and so happily bought a deck or 2 a week for quite awhile. Until mirrodin, then my whole deck was worthless. Tried to redeem my online deck to real cards, but found that only applies to unopened decks. So I keep playing a little bit in leauges from time to time, until now with magic3 online. It dogs. My CPU goes to 100 when I use it and its slower then snot. I suppose by the end of the year it may be better. But you got to wonder they have been working on it for 3 or 4 years and this is not impressive. They do not support mac or linux nor will they in the future. Since my cards are stuck online I will keep trying, but I have to say my experiences years ago in the bad ol days of slow internet are far superior to what they have now. Because it was about balance finese and gameplay, not power, slick packaging and artwork.
