Portland: Blue Fin

I’m a bit on the freakin’ lazy side, so I’m retroactively posting for my trip to Portland, Oregon.

My flight was really pleasant, although a little early for my tastes. When I arrived, it was close to lunchtime, Portland time. My friend who I went to visit told me about a sushi restaraunt called “Blue Fin”. The restaurant is downtown next to a quizno’s and some other stuff. You can tell I don’t know the area well.

Blue Fin has the best sushi I’ve ever eaten. Better than anything I’ve had in Japan, although I didn’t eat much sushi in Japan. Honestly, I’m more of a soba and katsudon kind of guy. Sushi usually cost too much for what you get. At Blue Fin, the sushi, as well as some other things, come around a bar on a little conveyor belt color coded plates marking the price. This wasn’t anything I hadn’t seen before.

In fact, it’s very similar to a restaurant I ate at in Aichi, except it was much better here. There was a variety of authentic/traditional type sushi such as my favorites of Unagi and Tako. There was also a number of sushi types that were totally new to me. One of the ones I found most creative, was a Thai themed roll that contained crushed peanuts and a sweet and hot Thai sauce. There were also a few rolls I was unable to identify, but were fabulous nonetheless. While typically, the prices for the rolls range from 1.25 to 3.50 or so, the day I was there, which was a Saturday, every plate was marked down to 1.50 regardless of what was resting on it. Naturally, this meant I got to try almost everything they put on the plates. I was curious to try their udon and soba that was also on the menu, but I decided to save it for another time so I could try all the sushi varieties. While I naturally preferred some of the rolls over others, I really didn’t eat anything I didn’t like. If you like sushi at all, I would highly recommend Blue Fin. Additionally, Saturday is the best day to go, but you should arrive before they open at noon so that you can get a seat.
